Cool to be in China. I have great times and hate times when I'm there...busy and mad...well, Shanghai's like that quite a bit.
I did my MA thesis on the rhetorical technique of jian 谏 as used by Yanzi in the Yanzi Chunqiu, but my PhD is radically different from this. I want to look at the motivations of the youth for listening to Chinese English code switching pop songs. It requires field research because aside from studying the songs, I will be using methodology from cultural anthropology to examine the attitudes of the youth within a university campus in shanghai. I will also be participating in KTV as part of my research (the relatively cheap one that students go to).

I can write in Chinese, though my speaking and listening are much better. I studied Yanzi Chunqiu for my Masters Thesis and had to translate parts of it into English, so my reading of Classical Chinese, for that period, anyway, is OK. I've only read 'Lian Cheng Jue' and about half of the first book of 'Shediao yingxiong zhuan', but it's going slow due to my thesis at the moment. I've seen more TV series though!
How long have you been/will you be/ in Chengdu?

Hello, just noticed you are in Chengdu. Are you teaching English? I used to teach in Shanghai, now I'm doing my PhD in Chinese in New Zealand (although I will probably have to go to China for my field research this year) and teaching Chinese part-time at the community college. But I love writing poetry too.

Hey! good to hear your heavy workload has eased in time for the lunar new year! all's well, mostly. A bit stir crazy, I quit my job, so I'm flitting around my house, yard and town trying to occupy myself, then the kids come home and it's so busy I can't breathe. so it goes.

How are you? I have been around here more often, but this is the first time I've seen you around. I've been keeping an eye out for you.
