Well, my chess teacher taught me not to use them, because they're unnecessary.

x's for capture or +s for check are both unnecessary. All that's needed is the piece and the square, and which piece if it's something Nfd4. I just prefer it now as it's more natural since I've done it ever since the beginning. There's a chess publication called New In Chess that does it this way. We don't have to I suppose.
