  1. Thank you. And I am trying, but to no avail.

Hi SSF thanks for your comments in the poetry makeover thread. I think you understood what I was getting at. Don't apologise for justifying your writing choices, we all do it or at least I certainly do. I think it is how we develop our inner editor - so we listen to what the reader has said and ask ourselves: 'is that what I intended', or 'is that how I meant it to be read' and decide from there whether to make changes or not. Whenever I make comments they are always suggestions only, things to think about, but always the decision as to whether to change your poem or not must be yours. But I think you know that already, so apologies for teaching you to suck eggs

OK, I thought you were talking about workshop groups on litnet. Don't think I'm going to find one around here. I think I'll start looking for possible places to submit pretty soon. I really appreciate your encouragement, by the way. If you know of any place you think I should submit to, let me know.

Yeah, well, it's impossible for someone to do that. There's too much involved. You need a good poet's book. And a book on rhetorical devices. I found that helpful. It just takes time, and reading and writing.

That's great. Write and learn writing. Take passages of fine writers, copy them down, and observe how they work; observe the grammer, the syntax, the imagery, the structure, and so on.

Hehe, you're always complaining. Hey that sounds really cool. The key at you age is to write, write, write, and get feedback. Best to you. One day you'll have to show me one of your stories.

I'm fine thanks. What kind of writing group? Is this at a college?

    Hey, how are you.

Thanks, that's good advice. I will look into finding some places to submit to. Right now I'm trying to generate more material so I will have more than just a few poems and a short story to submit. How do you find out about different workshop groups here. I would really love to join one.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. Sorry, I thought your message yesterday was sarcastic. Honestly, I've got no idea how to get published, especially when I'm just in the US about 3 weeks a year.

Yale Open Courses

by shortstoryfan on 05-15-2012 at 02:32 PM
I'm not sure if someone has already brought up this amazing resource, but Yale University has posted an entire semester worth of lectures for an Introduction to Theory of Literature Class. It's taught by this very well respected professor there, Paul Fry. I'm on the 4th lesson right now--and I'm so excited and thankful that this resource is available! Looks like this course is going to cover so many of the ideas I'm interested in: Heidegger, New Criticism, Russian Formalism, Deconstructionism, etc.

Essay

by shortstoryfan on 05-11-2012 at 06:39 PM
So, finally, three months after saying I wanted to write an essay, I began yesterday. I think the essay is going to end up being a sort of critique of poetry criticism, and will deal heavily with ideas about Deconstructionism, "Death of the Author", and the decentralization of language, and my experiences of viewing the world after the language's true nature has been uncovered to me. Or at least, the nature I perceive. It's not going to be a work of genius, will not even make sense most

Oh, I Can't Think Of A Title! Is It Really Important?

by shortstoryfan on 06-02-2011 at 04:26 PM
I'm just gonna use bullets, I think.

  • I think I like poetry.
  • I try to read poetry. I don't do a very good job. This makes me very sad. When I see what other people come up with when they read poetry, I find myself thinking that their way of viewing poetry is very odd.
  • The other day I went to poetry group. This guy said he didn't like this poem cause it needed a metaphor. This other guy (very intelligent, in my opinion) made him look kind of silly when he proved that the poem

On Printing

by shortstoryfan on 03-24-2011 at 01:55 PM
Today I printed out the poems I've finished and am somewhat happy with. The earliest was completed in November or December of 2009, and the latest was completed...well, today! There are fifteen.

Obviously, I wrote more than fifteen poems over this period of time, so where did those poems go?

The ones written for the poetry course I took (the poetry course from hell), I discarded. I've heard that many people keep everything they write, and I do too--unless it's garbage.
