The only books I have ever read are classics, so you see, I am not a very versatile reader. Lol.

Anywhooo, what are your favorite classics, qimi?! Is Anna Karenina a new addition to your favorites? What are your responses to the questions I posed on Les Mis?

Sorry for my disorganized writing style. I bet you’re like: Won’t this friggin’ guy just shut-up!

I can’t, qimi! My brain has a tendency to work like a community of middle-aged gossipers. It goes in 10,000 different directions at once! Until next time,

    Yours Truly,
    Adol09!

Not to bore you with my cheesy metaphors, but it is similar to an oyster shell caked in moss and grime that serves as the callous abode of a pearl. Ok, that was bad, but you get the point! Lol. Anyway, you're obviously a Hugo fan, and Hugo just so happened to be the author of my favorite book of all time, Les Mis, so let's talk about that!
    ---

Favorite character? Toss-up between The Bishop Myriel and Jean Valjean, since if it had not been for the former, the latter would never have become the man he was.

Favorite part? Toss up between Javert leaping (or did he fall?) into the river Seine, the often overlooked but imho the extremely fascinating description of the sewers of Paris (towards the end of the book), Jean Valjean's death, when Marius first sees Cosette (albeit a bit maudlin and cheesy, but it's a French novel, what do you expect?)

I don't mind, qimi . My depression is kept at bay by my fascination for poetry, math, physics, chemistry, metal, jazz, hip hop, my benevolent mother, the many interesting posts of The Literature Network Forums, and people like you! I like having simple conversations about profound works that have shaped the course of history and have inspired people for generations. This place is my haven for relaxation where I can sequester myself from the stress of tedious and frankly pointless college work. English, Philosophy and the analytical sciences promote creativity, whereas many of the life sciences saturate the reader in facts that have very little to do with permitting self-expression. A lot of great literature, in my opinion, presents a subtle paradox: the hideous emotional toll the author endured to express his/her thoughts, and the impeccable beauty of the final product.

I can't wait to read Nabokov's Pale Fire and Lolita! I friggin' love Russian Literature!!!!!!! Even more so than African-American literature, which some might see me as a 'sell-out' but I do appreciate W.E.B. Du Bois' The Souls of Black Folk and Frederick Douglass' My Bondage and My Freedom. I have yet to read The Invisible Man (not H.G. Wells, I have read that!!)

Oh qimi! I'm so in love with your avatar! Oddly, as much as I like it I have always wondered whether the child depicted is Cosette as a little girl or Gavroche. Do you know?

Reply ASAP! Or else... or else... I will cry! And you will be responsible for making me sad! Take that! Lol, jk. Sorry for the long, random response. I just love literature so much.

I cheered when Levin worked with his own peasants in the fields and I felt sorry for Anna during the heart-tugging parts where she was forcefully isolated from her son. Oddly enough though, I felt exhilarated when she was crushed by the train and I thought that the similarity of the description of her demise to the character who met with a similar fate towards the beginning of the book, was uncanny. I felt pity for Vronsky during the infamous horse race part where Anna's infatuation (more so than love) for him becomes very apparent.

My favorite character is Konstantin Levin, but I love his more acerbic counterpart personified as his brother, Nikolay. His demise is so drawn out and it seems as though the pages goaded me to tears as I witnessed his agony (A similar effect of Raskolnikov's visceral turmoil and Prince Myshkin's angelic purity in a world overrun with mendacity/sin). It also reminded me of my personal bout with chronic depression that lasted over 5 years. I love all the philosophical discussions (though I must admit I did not understand many of the historical references) of Russia's servant class and Tolstoy's intimation through Levin of an impending overthrow of the aristocracy.

Hey you!!!!!! Who do you like more, Kitty Stcherbatsky (sp?) or Anna Karenina, Alexei Vronsky or Alexey Alexandrovitch...

Ed, Edd n Eddy or The PowerPuff Girls?

Hey Qim! Yeah, I got a laptop for my birthday a few days ago, so I'll hopefully be around more often now. Glad to know I was missed.

Oh also, do you happen to know whether Alex is banned permanently or temporarily?

Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout

by qimissung on 12-15-2012 at 02:13 AM
I live in the United States of America, and we had another school shooting today. With horror I listened to the news reports that a gunman had gone into an elementary school and killed 27 people, 20 of them “children between the ages of 5 and 10.” And I listened tiredly and wearily to the usual rhetoric of the newscast without end as they recounted the “worst school shooting in an elementary school.”
I guess they are doing the best they can, but you simply can’t put a qualifier or adjective

In Memoriam

by qimissung on 04-03-2012 at 11:05 PM
One of my former students-he graduated last year-was shot and killed last night around 10 o'clock.

He had just finished playing a game of basketball and was sitting in a car on a dark street, with his cousin. They were waiting for his cousin's ride when another car drove up. It was someone they knew and they argued over a girl his cousin had been seeing. The young man in the car pulled out a gun and shot them. Victor was shot two times in the back. He was treated at a nearby hospital,

The Anger and The Anguish

by qimissung on 01-04-2012 at 02:24 PM
I read several good books in 2011. I read "Candide," "The Crying of Lot 49", "Housekeeping," "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," and "The Dubliners." I read others, but these I read last fall and today it is of "The Dubliners" I speak.

I've been wanting to read something by Joyce. Eventually I hope to read "Ulysses." I think that might be akin to saying that someday I'd like to climb Mount Everest, for

The Bird's Nest

by qimissung on 12-27-2011 at 03:20 PM
looking at it I knew it was different
a bird's nest
full of hope and fear
and the cavalier fulsomeness of life
the blind ability to get up each day under the weight of it all
to go out every day believing you were one of the masses
dressed in the same uniform
believing the same things
that god is good
that love will find a way
believing or hoping to believe that
the others would not notice your vampiric differences

I acquire some books

by qimissung on 12-04-2011 at 08:13 PM
I got up yesterday morning, a Saturday, around 5:45. I washed my face and dressed and walked to my car in the dark. I stopped by my local Starbucks and treated myself to a tall mocha.

I then made my way down Midway to 635; from there to Central Expressway from which I exited at Northwest Highway. My destination was the Half-Price Books located there, or rather the warehouse that I knew was located near it.

Once I arrived I noticed, somewhat to my chagrin, that there
