Dangerous Foods

by PeterL on 07-15-2017 at 04:01 PM
Today I was offered potentially dangerous foods twice, and I walked past a usually dangerous plant twice also. It occurred to me again that humans consume lots of things that are dangerous, some toxic and some usually leading to disease. Humans eat all sorts of strange things that they might be better off avoiding. There are the obvious ones like almond of apricot, cherry pits, peach pits and leaves, puffer fish, etc., but there are people who eat strange and clearly dangerous foods. One that comes

Persistence of Lies

by PeterL on 07-05-2017 at 02:26 PM
A Lie Can Travel Halfway Around the World While the Truth Is Putting On Its Shoes.

So who really did say it? Benham's Book of Quotations credits the line to Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a celebrated English fundamentalist Baptist preacher and the author of "John Ploughman's Talk; or, Plain Advice for Plain People." His exact words were: "A lie travels round the world, while Truth is putting on her boots."

Effects of Loud Noise

by PeterL on 06-26-2017 at 05:22 PM
Or why some handicaps in "Harrison Bergeron" were noises

I was annoyed by the noise level in a bar recently, so I left, but I was reminded of that great short story by Kurt Vonnegut "Harrison Bergeron"; specifically the use of noise to disrupt thought and the use of noise in bars and some other places to encourage people buying more and throwing caution to the wind. It does seem that noise effectively decreases intelligence.

Noise, especially discordant

Educational Shortcomings

by PeterL on 06-20-2017 at 04:09 PM
Educational systems seem to fail everyone in some significant way. Here in the U.S.A. elementary and secondary school teachers are generally under-trained and underpaid, so they arenít fully prepared to teach children, and there are major problems with the curriculum they are expected to teach. The curriculum doesn't include many things that should be included, and it does include many things that are a waste of time.

One thing that I was thinking of was basic logic. Many people

It's None of My Business

by PeterL on 06-11-2017 at 03:48 PM
I looked at the news to day, and there was an article about people demonstrating against sharia law in the U.S. and people counter demonstrating. am not intimately familiar with sharia, but this is an example of people shoving their religion into other people's lives. Those demonstrations were all around the country. I also recently ran across a video about Dearborn, Michigan, which has become a target for Muslim immigrants. In Dearborn the population is already fifty percent Muslim, and apparently
