    Sadly, Hitler's stated view was hardly unique. History shows that others felt the same way.

    Today, Bush has ''justified'' his invasion of Iraq on the grounds that he was ordered by the Christian god to do so. The parallel between the two is remarkably the same.

    But as Santayana observed decades ago, mankind learns nothing from history and allows these tragedies to be repeated. I shall venture to guess that such a tragedy will happen again within my lifetime and it, too, will go unpunished.
