Hello quasi .. .. just writing to wish you and your family all the best for the Holidays and the New Year!
I've been ill, and that's why I didn't answer sooner. Can we do Yeats? (since Montale was a modernist, I guess "contemporary" is to be taken in its widest possible meaning). If not, I wouldn't mind having a look at someone from the Beat generation - Ginsberg, for instance.
I think it would be nice visiting my friends in the list.. Howdy do quasi?
quasimodo1 asked "By the way, was '34 a good vintage for bordeaux?" Not sure about bordeaux, but 1934 was a good vintage year for depression babies, because very few were produced. (Lowest birthrate per capita of any year before or since, I have heard?) I'm not connoisseur of French wines, but I like all California varieties. Speaking of such, I just finished an excellent book, "The House of Mondavi: The Rise and Fall of an American Wine Dynasty", by Julia Flynn Siler. It's specifically about Robert Mondavi, who recently died at the age of 94. A fascinating read I thought. I recommend it.
I looked back at a few of your recent posts, and especially enjoyed House by the Sea, by Jonathan Galassi I'm not as familiar with twentieth century poets as I would like to be, so his collection Noons and Shadows, looks like a good place to start. I also took note of a comment you made to another member - "A posting is sometimes like an insult...you can't take it back". I hope you don't mind if I quote you on that?
Still can't send you PMs!! It's pink and bordeaux, not red. Can I choose any poet?? From any country? Is it for the nominations? I quite like Bishop, whom you suggested. Larkin I love too, would that be possible? Apart from them, there are a few French poets I wouldn't mind studying (René Char, Apollinaire, André Breton, maybe Louis Aragon, Prévert,...). But I don't know if they are translated into English and/or easy to find in anglophone countries. Bye!
Quasi, when you going to let me help you spruce this place up a bit? Sample appartment my eye! good start with that great Escher picture above, but we need some colors in here. I sort of imagine a nice maroon or do you prefer something in the cool palette tones such as blues?
