Actually, that helps a lot, because his portuguese is awful. I always considered that his fame is due more to the international market (brazilian editorial market is not very significant) and that his translators are quite good.
All else, I find him a shame to a great writing tradition developed here until the 60's and trully great writers (Machado de Assis, Guimaraes Rosa, Drummond, Mario de Andrade, Monteiro Lobato, etc,etc) being virtually unknow outside here. Right now, one of the most notable writers alive is a brazilian named Ariano Suassuna, but I doubt he is even translated to english. Because Coelho fame devour all, do not create anything here, is only dedicated to his fame and the simple-minded texts that he wrote is just keeping down brazilians readers...
other than that, his personality is not exactly exemplar..
