I agree with everything Empty said, and will only try to entertain any fans who may still be reading (Danik? Is that you?) with another Jane Austen...

Oh no! I'm void! Horrors! Funny stuff, Empty. I will respond only by quoting Jane Austen, from Northanger Abbey. Catherine Morland is talking to...

Despite objecting to "Leghorn", in general I think different languages are free to use their own pronunciations and words. American who say, "May he...

Either pronunciation is fine with me, as long as folks remember that the "t" in "often" is silent.

I had read the New Yorker article, and immediately thought of the NitLet with its long, long tradition of threads devoted to Orwell's 1984. I also...

Good to see you posting at LitNet, Empty. I generally read your posts, and sometimes even try (often unsuccessfully) to understand them. I have...

"Darkness at Noon" is ranked #8 on Modern Library's list of 100 greatest English novels. This is strange, because it was originally written in...

I'm no Nabokov expert, but I think he WAS a romantic, like Humbert and Kinbote, his most famous creations. He had a sense of humor about it, and a...

Somebody showed me the location Nabokov's digs in downtown Ithaca. Apparently a modest second-floor apartment in a nondescript building. Big...

Definitely. You hit the nail on the head with that one. From the words of a great trainer, GM Ed Gufeld, if a person who plays 23 hours a day for 6 months came head to head with one who studies one hour a day for the same period, there would be no contest; the person who studied would win with ease.

My favorite card games are gin and hearts, because it was romanticized so well in Hearts in Atlantis.
  3. Bridge is a great game. You get to be dummy 1\4th of the time (it's like playing chess where every 20 minutes you get to take a break for 5 minutes). Also, it's a team game so the teamwork is fun.

I've had a couple of periods in my life when I've started playing chess 3 or 4 times a week. However, because I'm competitive, after 3 or 4 weeks of regular play I'd start massacring my friends -- so the game would break up. It wasn't because of natural talent -- it's just that once I started playing I'd get interested and read a few chess books. Studying up like that gave me too much of an advantage for them to overcome without studying themselves.

Then I think it must have been Emil :-)

That's pretty cool, I hear Bridge is a good game, but I've never played it. I'm similar - it's nice to meet another natural talent at games :-)
  5. I don't really play chess, Nikolai. That is, I know how to play, but don't play enough to be good. I'm good at all games -- so I'd probably beat 95% of other novices, but I would have no chance against an expert.

I did win a duplicate bridge tournament today! With a new partner!

    Hey Ecurb, hope you're well.

Did I see you mention somewhere that you play chess? I thought maybe I had - just wondering.

Happy New Year by the way.

The reason I ask is that most comedy writers are male (not that there's anything wrong with that, to quote Seinfeld.) Being of the opposite persuasion, I get discouraged when I read the credits @ the end of shows.
Feel good about yourself, though. Not everybody has a flair for
    humor.

If you don't mind my prying, are you a he or a she?
  9. Merry Christmas, Ecurb!
