On Ferlenghetti's 100th birthday I posted the following poem. Today I'm thinking that the days won't be quite so fine anymore. Recipe For...

Roger Scatcherd did use a weapon. It's unclear whether it was a club or a stone (Roger himself didn't remember, because he was drunk). I agree...

I appear to be talking to myself, but Kev has aroused my interest. Why (I wonder) does Trollope have his romantic lead horse whip someone? Why does...

Frank Gresham's horse whipping Mr. Moffat is structurally necessary to the novel. It is compared to the seminal event of the novel: Roger...

Definitely. You hit the nail on the head with that one. From the words of a great trainer, GM Ed Gufeld, if a person who plays 23 hours a day for 6 months came head to head with one who studies one hour a day for the same period, there would be no contest; the person who studied would win with ease.

My favorite card games are gin and hearts, because it was romanticized so well in Hearts in Atlantis.
  3. Bridge is a great game. You get to be dummy 1\4th of the time (it's like playing chess where every 20 minutes you get to take a break for 5 minutes). Also, it's a team game so the teamwork is fun.

I've had a couple of periods in my life when I've started playing chess 3 or 4 times a week. However, because I'm competitive, after 3 or 4 weeks of regular play I'd start massacring my friends -- so the game would break up. It wasn't because of natural talent -- it's just that once I started playing I'd get interested and read a few chess books. Studying up like that gave me too much of an advantage for them to overcome without studying themselves.

Then I think it must have been Emil :-)

That's pretty cool, I hear Bridge is a good game, but I've never played it. I'm similar - it's nice to meet another natural talent at games :-)
  5. I don't really play chess, Nikolai. That is, I know how to play, but don't play enough to be good. I'm good at all games -- so I'd probably beat 95% of other novices, but I would have no chance against an expert.

I did win a duplicate bridge tournament today! With a new partner!

    Hey Ecurb, hope you're well.

Did I see you mention somewhere that you play chess? I thought maybe I had - just wondering.

Happy New Year by the way.

The reason I ask is that most comedy writers are male (not that there's anything wrong with that, to quote Seinfeld.) Being of the opposite persuasion, I get discouraged when I read the credits @ the end of shows.
Feel good about yourself, though. Not everybody has a flair for
    humor.

If you don't mind my prying, are you a he or a she?
  9. Merry Christmas, Ecurb!
