Definitely. You hit the nail on the head with that one. From the words of a great trainer, GM Ed Gufeld, if a person who plays 23 hours a day for 6 months came head to head with one who studies one hour a day for the same period, there would be no contest; the person who studied would win with ease.

My favorite card games are gin and hearts, because it was romanticized so well in Hearts in Atlantis.
  3. Bridge is a great game. You get to be dummy 1\4th of the time (it's like playing chess where every 20 minutes you get to take a break for 5 minutes). Also, it's a team game so the teamwork is fun.

I've had a couple of periods in my life when I've started playing chess 3 or 4 times a week. However, because I'm competitive, after 3 or 4 weeks of regular play I'd start massacring my friends -- so the game would break up. It wasn't because of natural talent -- it's just that once I started playing I'd get interested and read a few chess books. Studying up like that gave me too much of an advantage for them to overcome without studying themselves.

Then I think it must have been Emil :-)

That's pretty cool, I hear Bridge is a good game, but I've never played it. I'm similar - it's nice to meet another natural talent at games :-)
  5. I don't really play chess, Nikolai. That is, I know how to play, but don't play enough to be good. I'm good at all games -- so I'd probably beat 95% of other novices, but I would have no chance against an expert.

I did win a duplicate bridge tournament today! With a new partner!

    Hey Ecurb, hope you're well.

Did I see you mention somewhere that you play chess? I thought maybe I had - just wondering.

Happy New Year by the way.

The reason I ask is that most comedy writers are male (not that there's anything wrong with that, to quote Seinfeld.) Being of the opposite persuasion, I get discouraged when I read the credits @ the end of shows.
Feel good about yourself, though. Not everybody has a flair for
    humor.

    Keep writing and posting.

If you don't mind my prying, are you a he or a she?
  9. Merry Christmas, Ecurb!
