So, did it only take a year to get fluent in Arabic? I am trying to study Chinese, and it's going to take forever. I know a little Spanish, as I taught English as a Second language for several years. I can't speak it, but I can read it on a very limited, elementary level.

I'm sure you had to study it for hours a day. Was it an immersion type program? Any suggestions for how to proceed?
