A Little Song

Rate this Entry
Just a little song I thought of while walking the dog. I couldn't be bothered to write it down on paper.
It started because I'm not pretty sure that the other thing I can see is Ursa Major and not Ursa Minor. Ursa Minor has a longer tail. Well. I say Ursa Major. What I actually see is the bit called the Plough (Big Dipper in the US) but number 3 in my things to see in space flash cards is Ursa Major which contains the dipper. I prefer saying Ursa Major anyway, it's so much nicer.

So. The song goes;
It starts with Orion,
Then Ursa Major,
Then it saw a red star,
A blue star too.
Then it went to Jupiter,
With four moons........
AlthoughJupiterhas63moonsandcounting.

I did debate whether to put the star bit in before Ursa Major since I'm only now pretty sure that's what it is. But I noticed it before I had my telescope to look at a red and blue star. Although I could count the red and blue stars in Orion instead...but since they're part of the constellation they don't really need an introduction.

It's a little list of recognisable things I've spotted this year. The first constellation I've been able to recognise is Orion and that was over the Winter. Then I thought I spotted Ursa Major. Then I got my telescope and played around with it and saw a red and a blue star in the same night. Then I found that round thing that we're now pretty sure is Jupiter. It's still hard to tell because it's just a dot that's bigger than a star. There are some complicated calculations to work out before I can use the zoom properly, apparently. I don't really mind though.

And I say things that I found. Not exactly the right word. They were already there, I just got to see them properly for the first time. When I see something else I'll put it in the song. I hear Saturn should be coming out nicely in a month or so.
I'd love to get a good look at Orion but he's not outside my bedroom window anymore, at least not when it's dark enough to see him. I might have to wait until winter for that. Something to look forward to the .

Bluebiird out.

    That's pretty good sky watching if you live in a city to see a constellation.. I think you said you live in London. Your telescope must be pretty good. Maybe there's a class in a local school/university you can take since you seem so interested. It may push you to another level.
