Sun Dogs Are Awesome

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.
Sun Dogs really are cool! Their scientific name is parhelion (plural: parhelia). A sun dog is a common bright circular spot on a solar halo, and is an optical phenomenon caused by the reflection (or refraction) of sunlight by small ice crystals that make up cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. More often than not, two or even more sun dogs can be seen on opposite sides of the sun at the same time.

Sun dogs appear usually at sunrise or sunset, but there are exceptions to this, of course.

Earth would be the first planet closest to the sun with enough amount of ice crystal-carrying clouds, and the pair of sun dogs would be aligned with our horizon. On other planets and moons where water and ice are less prevalent, however, various crystal structures produce different halos. On the giant gas planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune — other crystals form the clouds of ammonia, methane, and other substances that can produce halos with four or more sun dogs.

If you want more information on sun dogs (parhelion) you can always do a Google search, and a whole lot of information will be at your fingertips.

Why do I post of Sun Dogs today? Well, I saw the phenomena today, and naturally did not have my camera handy.... so I thought it would be a good blog item. Hope you liked it.

As Always,
Kizzo

This is very beautiful, but why is it called sun dogs?

I really don't know WHY they are called sun dogs (some people put the word together ~~ sundogs ~~ both are correct), if I ever find out I'll post it here. Now, my own imagination dictates that because the image is formed as explained above, one might see three suns, right? So the 'real' sun would be in the centre, and the other two (one on either side) are doggin' around the sun -- you know, doggin' around meaning teasing? (ok, its late, and it was just a thought, ha ha!)

Wow, cool pictures Kiz, and I love that you've explained how it happens. One to print off and put into my clippings of 'the reasons I love light and clouds'!

Having lived in Alaska for several years I thought the word sundog came from an Inuit legend. I'm sure it is a phenomena seen often on the Iditarod.
    Beautiful pictures!

Alaska is definitely on my list of places to go in my lifetime. The question would be what time of year do the sun dogs come out and play, and what part of Alaska is the best choice (decisions decisions) ... Thanks for your input Amp, I bet your comment is right on the money.

I enjoyed your post. I knew what sundogs were, but not the varied possibilities that you brought up here.
