Earth's Pain

Earth’s Pain

One morning the earth found me crying.
She said to me ‘Why do you weep?’
‘Earth’ I replied ‘I’m in such pain’.
‘Where is your pain?’ she asked of me,
‘For I can not see any injuries’
I said ‘ no earth, my pain cannot be seen’
‘It is a pain from deep within my soul’
Earth said ‘Tell me, what ails you’
And I did…
‘This morning I saw a million graves
Then a million more
I saw wives without husbands
Lovers with empty beds
Children with no fathers
I saw fields of blood that never dry
I heard unending tears of pain
I saw such horrors that I cannot speak of
That is my pain and why I weep
Earth then looked at me and said…
These are tears of despair
They are tears of your guilt
‘My guilt’ said I ‘What guilt?
What have I done to weep as I do?’
Earth sighed and then said
‘You made the graves,
And you caused a widow’s grief,
The lover to sleep alone
You have made a world with orphans
It is you who soak the fields with blood
And the unspeakable horror is war.’
Earth replied, she too weeping as she spoke…
‘You have scarred my body with your hate,
You have drenched my skin with your blood,
You made the weapons for war from my flesh
And you hide your dead under my skin
You have hurt and defiled me since your very birth’.
‘How can you accuse me of all that?’ I cried.
Earth then looked at me with eyes of steel…
‘It is not accusation, it is truth that I speak’.
‘How can it be, you don’t even know my name!’ answered I.
‘Yes I do’ said earth ‘you are called MAN’.
With that earth spoke no more.

I really enjoyed your poem RG57, it is the kind of poem that could be dramatically read at a poetry coffeehouse to be savoured.
