March/Ireland read- Vote Tain!

Rate this Entry
Oaky so i decided i'd do a spot of campaigning for The Tain. Its not every month you have an opertunity to read a very new translation of a legend first written about in the Annuls of Ireland around 8th A.D. Its such a fantastic story, based around a disagreement over a bull which brings two parts of Ireland into a war. Its also about two friends, Setanta(Cuchulainn) and Ferdia, that grew up together but have been unfortunate to find each other on opposite sides and are made to fight one another to choose the outcome of the battle.

You might like to listen to "The Tain" by the Decemberists, if you haven't already. I really like it. I LOVE The Tain, and the 18 minute, 5 part song by The Decemberists I think does it nicely, although I've only read some of the more famous parts of the Irish literature. I definitely would like to read it all someday!! Who is the new translation by?

I knew you liked The Tain! Its by a guy called Ciaran Carson. Dont know much about the guy but i'm hoping his translation isnt as weird as Thomas Kinsellas...I'll check that decemberists out! Thanks for the suggestion. The Tain is one of the nominations for the March/Ireland read but The Dubliners by Joyce is ahead by one vote. If you are interested in reading it, why not vote for it and help it be the nomination that way you can read it with a few of us and any questions you have i'll be able to answer them. Its definitely the choice for people who want to get to the foundations of Irish storytelling.

I read the Kinsella translation many years ago, and quite enjoyed it. But I couldn't find another way into the Tain at the time, so must needs traversed his translation. The blotch pictures were gruesome though, such as Cuchullain squeezing the **** out of someone if I remember rightly.

    Yeah...
... The Carson one is easier to read and doesnt come across quite as brutal.
Its a great epic though. Ive always wanted too do my own version of it... just to time consuming for me!

You know I wound up buying The Tain. But it remains unread. One of these days.
