Starry Starry Night

Rate this Entry

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflecting Vincent's eyes of China blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hands

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as
beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
A silver thorn on a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

Vincent Van Gogh painted Starry Night while in an Asylum at Saint-Remy in 1889.

I love this song very much, and the tribute to Vincent V.G. in just these words alone has always choked me up:
But I could have told you Vincent
This world was never meant for one as
beautiful as you
Well, I don't know about everyone else, but I say thank God for the artists of the world. Whoever you are, whatever your medium -- we love you very much, and want to thank you for your contributions to the beauty of the world.

I leave you with a self portrait of Van Gogh:

Thanks for dropping in!

The painting is one of my favorites ever. I had to write an analysis on it for my art class last year. I recently heard the song and LOVED it -- I now have both Chloe Agnew's of Celtic Woman fame version and Josh Groban's version.

Yes, wonderful song (I've loved it ever since I heard it and I've often sung it with my daughters) and great picture, one of my favourite Van Gogh pictures. This artist's life shows how close "madness" (whatever that may be) and creativity often are. He suffered a lot, but he left us some of the most beautiful paintings.

Oh, and thanks for saying hello to me on the boast thread, kiz. We must have been posting on different threads the last two weeks or so - and when you're online, I'm probably in bed (or working? I'm so bad at time zones). And of late, I've often been so tired that I couldn't be bothered to post a lot, just read what the others had to say. But tonight I'm fine. Hello, kiz!

Glad that you kind folk that posted were touched by this entry ... I love Van Gogh, he really did suffer because the humanity of the world was too much for him -- bless his heart. Yeah -- this was for the artists, whoever they are out there. Hi Barbara, take it E-Z, eh? Jin -- you rock, now do your homework (lol) - as tu les problèmes avec des Français? -- PrinceM, thank you, eat your broccoli and cheese pleez
