Good Things Happen Around Halloween

Some of you may recall I while back I did a post talking about the Atlas Shrugged movie when it had recently come out in theaters, and because of the stigma against Ayn Rand the movie was taking a lot of negative heat and being boycotted, or just slammed in reviews. And being that the books are divided into three parts, the movie was also going to be made in three parts, but after the first movie had so much outcry against it, the director was considering not going on to make the 2nd movie.

But of course I still had to see the first movie, and being that I have read the book well I already happened anyway it would not be that big of a deal, though after watching the first movie, even knowing that might be the end of it, and already knowing the story I was still disappointed at the thought of not getting to see the rest visually play out on the screen and a part of me always held the secret hope that there 2nd and 3rd parts might be at released onto DVD even if not released into theaters.

Well I was watching TV when all of the sudden this preview came on for Atlas Shrugged Part II and so needless to say I was quite exited that in the end the director made the choice to continue with the movie and did give up on it.

Well, I'm glad for you, DM. I read Atlas Shrugged many years ago. It was alright, but I had questions about it even then. And I have to say that having certain people embrace it currently is somewhat off putting. It was never that interesting to me in the long run.

I can see where some of Rand's ideas might appeal to certain individuals, but I also know the Rand herself would not support nor agree with some of those certain individuals.

    That's good to know.

Rand was generally critical of all politicians, and as an atheist believed all decisions should be made purely based on logic and reason and staunchly opposed religion being brought into politics. She stated that when religion influences politics, it is a very dangerous thing.

I haven't read Rand, but I watch a documentary about her life. One thing people criticize her for is her belief that people are only motivated by action that they will benefit from personally. She did not believe in the concept of altruism. The debate whether exists or not often occurs on the forum. This is declared as one of the principal pillars of capitalism.

Yes a lot of people really do not like ideas of individualism, and one being motivated by selfish action opposed to wanting to do something good for others. And the fact that her ideas are of a Capitalistic nature and many people are critical of capitalism also add to the dislike of her philosophy. While I am not saying I am completely on bored with Capitalists myself there is still much in Rand's ideas and philosophy that personally do resonate with me. I do not see anything inherently wrong with a person being motivated purely for their own personal gain and not worrying about what anyone else thinks.

I like Rand's characters because they could care less about what the masses think of them. They are not out to please any one else and they will not compromises their own values and principles for the sake of any one else. Though many strongly disagree with just what their principles and values are.

I have not given an opinion about her philosophy, simply for the reason I haven't read Atlas Shrugged. I think it might be one of those books that I either hate or love. It's hard to say, because I am extremely individualistic, but as a religious person, I also believe in helping others for the sake of helping (even when it becomes a burden). But DM, knowing what little I do about you from your blog posts it makes sense that you realy like her. My younger brother is a huge fan.

I never completed Atlas Shrugged but this might be a time to finally read it. I really didn't like her writing. Nothing to do with her ideas, just her writing skills. I have to say I wasn't impressed, though I might actually be sympathetic to some of her ideas. You know her atheism is not as promoted as her free market capitalism. It was mostly her anti Marxism and anti communism that propelled her to notoriety. In fact I know of no people on the left (Liberal or even farther left than that) that claim her as an influence but I know many Conservatives that do. One most prominent today is Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick.
