I just bought almost all the books I will be reading in school this semester. It is kinda odd to buy 17 books that you know you will read within 3 months, I own 2 so in all it's 19 books to read and articles and essays. I saw one schedule and the teacher has about 50 pages of extra stuff to read, besides the novel for each week. Well I am gonna start reading right now even though school starts in September, the first book in a course about the autobiography is Rousseau's Confessions. It's more than 500 pages. There are many interesting books to read and I am excited. I finished Dracula last night and I feel like I am out of practice reading in English, it took me almost 2 hours to read about 60 pages, I used to be faster than that. I sure need to be faster than that if I am to read about two novels each week.

I am taking 3 courses and in two of them I have to read about a novel a week so that is a whole lot of reading. The third course is about different types of literature and I only have to read two novels and a bunch of essays and stuff like that, but luckily one of the books is Frankenstein and I read that about a year ago so that is something. The other course where there is a novel a week is about war literature. Mainly first WW and some Balkan wars. I have a list below of the books to read in the months to come.

The Woman Warrior:Memoirs of a girlhood among ghosts-Maxine Kingston
Confessions of an English opium eater- Thomas de Quincey
Autobiography- John Stuart Mill
Confessions- Rousseau
Autobiography of Malcolm X- Malcolm X
Skating to Antarctica- Jenny Diski
W, or the memory of childhood-George Perec
Words- Sartre
Skugga-Baldur- Sjón
Frankenstein-Shelley
If this is a man/the truce- Levi Primo
The Assault-Harry Mulisch
Regeneration-Pat barker
The wars- Findley
All quiet on the western front-Remarque
S. a novel about the Balkans-Slavenka Draculic

not fiction
Autobiography- linda anderson
literary theory the basics
Cambridge companion to the literature of the first world war
Cambridge companion to the literature of world war
also one icelandic book about literature

I am going to my step dads cabin today and I am gonna try and read a bit, my mom and he are there now and I will go with my brother and my dogs. I hope the weather will be OK so the dogs will be fine outside. They are so addicted to me, Sisko can't be in another room and not outside if I am inside so I hope I can just be outside all day reading with them. My mom and step dad are not big fans of dogs and my boys are very hairy and they bark. things I find OK but they don't like it so I was just happy that they wanted them to come too. They have a small, I don't really know what to call it, a cross between a shed and a cabin. It's very nice but it's just one very small room with a bed and nothing more I will sleep there with the boys. The rest in the cabin.

I am excited about school and I am gonna start reading a bit of Rousseau.

Does that Reading-List make you feel blessed or cursed ?

50/50 I think, some of these books are long

I loved reading Rousseau's Confessions. He is so endearing- there is actually a discussion thread on it on the forum if you feel like looking it up. It's my no means academic, but general reactions to the literature.

I hope you enjoy the books. I'd hate to have to read from a list like that.

So English is your second language? What are you going to do with your degree when you are done?

Yes English is actually my third language cause here on the ice we learn Danish from the age of 8 or 9 and English a year later.

I don't know what to do when I finish my B.A. maybe M.A...

That's awesome Helga, I had no idea you could speak three languages. After traveling abroad, I have been thinking about trying to learn another language. I think the language that would make most sense is French, because I am so close to the Canadian border by Quebec. It's truly embarrassing to be an American abroad and speak no other language except English. I was told however, that it is better to just speak English rather than speak a second language poorly.

Yikes. I don't think I would like much there. All Quiet on the Western Front is a fine novel. If This is Man I read a couple of years ago (US title, Survival at Auschwitz) and is also a good work. Just about every book there that I recognize is depressing. The ones I don't know sound too philosophical or polemical.
