Matthew's First Day at School

Rate this Entry
I know I owe an update on Matthew. It’s been a while and some have been asking and a bit has happened since then, mostly Matthew progressing into his terrible twos. This blog will not bring you up to date. I’ll have to save that for another time. But it documents an important day, Matthew’s first day at school.

A two year old in school? Well, this is pre-pre-school. Yeah they have such a thing. Apparently it’s common now. My wife had started looking for one she liked a few months ago, and she checked several and settled on this one a few weeks ago. Actually I remember the email exchange we had. It went something like this.

She: I visited Kiddy Academy today. I liked it best. I signed him up for two half days a week.
Me: Oh great. When does he start?
She: July 10th.
Me: So soon. I thought he was going to start in September when he turns three?
She: Well I pushed it up.
Me: Why?
She: I think he needs it.
Reading between the lines, I couldn’t help feel that it’s not Matthew that needs it but her, but that’s another story.

So today was the day. I happened to take the morning off, and I got him up. As it happened he slept late today, beyond his normal waking time.

“Wake up, wake up sleepy head, you have a busy day today.” And so I got him changed, teeth brushed, washed up, hair combed, and dressed. Not sure he really understood what it all meant. We packed his knapsack and took some pictures in front of the house.

My wife dropped him off. He was shy at first but within fifteen minutes he opened up. That’s typical for him. Once he started playing my wife left and he was fine the rest of the morning. It was even a struggle to get him away when it was time to leave.

He even gets a daily report to take home. Today’s report was the following, ghost written from his voice:

What we did today:
I played in the yard with my friends!! We continued exploring the theme light as a feather. We played at the sensory table using different bird items. We colored birds and decorated them with different color feathers. We reviewed the alphabet and numbers 1-10. We practiced our color of the month, yellow, and shape of the month, diamond. We sang our songs at circle time. We read a book called “Feathers for Lunch.”

How I felt today:
Happy to be at school!!

My friend of the day:
Chiara.

LOL, I never had a friend for the day, and certainly not one called Chiara.

Breathes a sigh of relief--I have been more active on Facebook lately and elsewhere but was pretty sure I hadn't lost three years when I read the blog title. Pre-pre-school--wow. Glad he had a good time.

To the other mother's out there, please help me in explaining to my dear Virgil that it is important that Matthew learn how to socialize with kids his own age LOL!!

I struggle with this one too and I'm a teacher. Twos go to school to be with other children, learn structure, and learn how to separate in a healthy way from parents. These are a few of the benefits of pre-school. It seems that Matthew likes it, so it can be a win-win for everyone. Mine goes to daycare, so he get a bit of the preschool environment, lacking the structure. I am kind of relaxed about it, but I think that it is always a good decision. But many children really do benefit from the program and you will begin to see these benefits in his interactions with you at home.

    Really cute pictures.

Thanks Buh4Bee for your input. The main reason why I did it was so that Matthew can be around kids his own age and learn how to socialize with other kids. Right now there are no kids for him to play with and the play groups that we did attend there was no socialization going on except for the mom's.

Virgil and Puss, he is so adorable!! I can't believe how huge he is getting, and school will be a wonderful thing. The time spent with other children will be great, especially if he doesn't normally get that. Take care, all of you. Lots of love.

Gaack! He is so adorable! Yeah, it's nice for them to have other kids to play with. I remember when my oldest was about three and we had a little girl over that he used to play with, and they played doctor-I was the patient and they "cured" me with their musical instruments. So cute.

Virgil, Matthew is so darn cute. I wish I could hug him. Yes, it is very important, actually vital, today to have them enrolled in a pre-pre-school for socialization, your wife is right. Brooke loves daycare and she has many pals and friends. I think Matthew will love it as well and learn so much. He is adorable and really growing up so fast (too fast).

Baki and Janine!!! You're both alive!! Hopefully both doing well.

Thank you all for commenting. Of course I realize Matthew needs socialization. I was just making a wry quip that has a tiny element of truth in it.

When I saw the title of this blog post I wondered if I had fallen into some sort of time warp and woken up 4 years in the future because it seemed like Matthew was a baby only a few months ago, ha.

As long as he has fun it should be a positive experience for him.

Virgil! That is so MY teaching position! I teach two and three year olds at a private Christian academy here in Fort Worth! It doubles as daycare and is a great way for the kids to learn structure and socialization along with their letters and colors and shapes etc. etc. Before I started, I had no idea that such small little minds were capable of so much!

This was my first time seeing photos of Matthew! The last time I had checked out your blog, you and your wife were still in the process of back and forth visits and paperwork. I am so happy for the three of you!! He is adorable and looks so smart with his knapsack all ready for school!
