The Cabin in the Woods

As we all know I am a horror freak, so I have been super excited about the move The Cabin in the Woods, because it looked awesome.

I just saw it today, and I must say it was not at all what I excepted, and I do have to give credit to whoever created the trailer for doing a fabulous job of misleading and not giving it all away. While the movie was not truly scary, I thought it was wonderfully innovative, and did provide a very interesting and original take upon horror films. In a way it was almost satirical of the horror genre, but the humor aspects of it was handled in a well balanced way that it did not go too far. All of the different elements of the film worked together perfectly.

For any one who is familiar with John Carpenter, of whom I love, this film in some ways reminded me a little bit of his stuff. In fact when I came out of the film one of the first things I thought was, I have to know who directed this.

So I looked it up and the director's name is Drew Goddard, and this was his first time directing, so I am quite eager to see what he might come out with in the future. But I did find that he was a producer of Lost, and he was a writer for Cloverfield, which I loved.

I see him as having the potential for being a very creative visionary in the movie world.

I have been waiting for this movie for months, it's not here yet.Joss Whedon wrote the script with Drew Goddard so I know it's a bit sci-fi. I love Joss Whedon and he said in an interview that this was his cabin, how he wanted this very common theme in horror movies to be. also he has a few of 'his' actors in it like Fran Kranz (I loved him in Dollhouse) and amy acker and tom lentz.... I can't wait to see it. But my problem is I am not a very big horror film fan and nobody wants to see it with me so I will probably be in the back row alone pinching my legs.

It is not your average horror film, though it is a sort of a play on the horror genre, in my opinion it was not really scary, but than again, being an avid horror fan my opinion of what is not very scary might be different than someone else's. But it is very different.

The movie has a real Whedon feel to it. It's more like a parody of torture porn/new-slasher type films from the 2000s. There's some fun call outs to older horror movies in there for the genre savvy, like the Hellraiser puzzle box.

Received lukewarm reviews here in Ohio and not my cup of tea anyway.

I saw a good horror movie the other night from Norway called Cold Prey. Whether they're similar I can't say because I don't like spoilers, so have been avoiding reviews on Cabin.

    I recommend Cold Prey though
