My name on FICS is ktmem. I'll see you on there sometime. I won the tournament though there was no prize fund. (I actually won a free drink and dessert.) I only played two games, too, because I showed up late and had to take a bye. I beat a 1940 and a 1520. The game against the 1900 was interesting - we reached an opposite-colored bishop endgame, where I was down a pawn and we each had a rook on the board. I trapped his rook so as to force the trade of rooks, after which there would have been a very straightforward draw, but he got ambitious and sacrificed the exchange. I ended up winning the ensuing endgame as we were both in time pressure, but after the game I think we demonstrated it's probably still a draw after the exchange sac.
Sounds good, we'll have to play 5 0 on fics sometime. What is your name on there? How did the tournament go?
hey nikolai, i had fun playing with you, even though we only got to play one game. we'll have to do it again sometime - i finally got my account registered on FICS (it took them a day to get back to me) so i'll look for you on there. i'm playing in a tournament tomorrow (wish me luck!) it should be around 3 or 4 games at game 30, dual-rated. there isn't much of a prize but there is free lunch. more importantly a tournament is a tournament, and every tournament helps you improve. have a nice weekend!
