  1. I don't read much on art either, but Magritte really intrigues me. I don't really agree with art that relies on informed viewers. It seems like a crutch for a painting to obtain significance through things outside of itself, but that's me.

When that day comes, the link will be here:
    The Manifesto of Surrealism

I haven't seen any other films of Bunuel, but it is an interesting title.
I have never heard of Carlos Saura; I'll look into, thanks.
  2. I didn't know that. Thanks, Nick. I am rather sloppy when it comes to the theoretical part of art. I don't read enough on the artists, paintings or movements. Now, when I think of it reading Breton's Manifesto seems a good idea, may be I'll do it someday.
Yes, I've seen this film and it made a great impression on me. I saw it a year ago, but I've recently started exploring Bunuel's work. Yesterday I saw The Exterminating Angel. It's very good and I would strongly recommend it as I'd have said if this was a book club discussion. I am currently doing some reading on his films and after that I will be watching more of them.
Now I am planning on watching a Carlos Saura film, main characters in which are Bunuel, Garcia LOrka and Dali - Bunuel and King Solomon's Table. It seems it will be fun
  3. I've recently read the Manifesto of Surrealism by Breton, so I've really been getting into surrealism. Magritte is like the Camus of surrealism: while Camus insisted that he was an absurdist and not an existentialist, Magritte stated he was not a surrealist ... but I don' know how he defined himself. I've always considered him a meta-artist. Have you seen the short film Un chien andalou?
  4. By saying I am not great fan of his I didn't exactly mean I don't like his works, I like them, but he is just not my favourite artist. Otherwise I like the surrealism, but usually I prefer other artist representing the movement. Magritte is a great example. I like his works a lot, although I've "discovered" him recently.
Thank you for the link, you were right it's hilarious
  5. Thanks. I looked through the book and I was surprised that a lot of the passages were funny. Surrealist art is the only art that I really "get", so it's natural that I'm a fan I guess and although I prefer Magritte's compositions, Dali is a master craftsman.

Dali was definitely a character. Here is a funny moment:

  6. Great, I hope you'll like it. I am not great fan of Dali's works, but I find him an interesting figure in art and that's why I decided to read his autobiography. It's rather confusing in the beginning, or at least for me it was, but it's worth it. I think it gives a different perspective to his works and beside that it's full of interesting...uhm...stuff The only downside is that it's pretty hard to read. I find it difficult to concentrate on it for a long time.

Great profile page especially the reading monkey
  7. I just picked up The Secret Life of Salvador Dali!
  8. Hahha, I am afraid you will have to live with it Still, as compensation I leave you a dancing banana I hope you like them.
  9. I don't mind being added as your friend, but I don't think I can say the same about the 'hi'.
  10. I am dropping by to say 'hi' and to add you as a friend, I hope you won't mind
