    The idea that Greco-Roman sculpture was originally brightly painted has been known for years. The Romaneque and Gothic cathedrals would have been brilliantly colored as well. The reality sort of undermines all that "classical" austerity. Greek painting and Minoan and Etruscan painting is all brightly colored... to the point of an almost Modernist expressionism. That the Greek and Roman works were the same only makes sense. Had the colors survived it might have given us a whole different concept of "classicism" and of color.
