We don't often thing about taxes on imports in the country. Import tariffs used to be the main source of income for the federal government, but federal; expenditures became so large that they couldn't be covered by income tariffs. Income taxes used to be greatly restricted, and they were only paid by rich people. I remember going into the kitchen, when I was a child, and I heard my father say, “But only rich people pay that.” And my mother replied, “I guess that means that we are rich.”

    General:
The Benevolent Despotism Party exists to govern the country in ways that would allow people to live their lives as they wish without getting in the way of others. Unfortunately, the U.S. Government has allowed many people ...

Yesterday afternoon, I had an interesting conversation with a recent college graduate. I was surprised that he didn’t realize that marketing fluff had taken him in as much as it had. It all started because his so-called “smart phone” wasn’t working, but my cheap flip-phone was, so I told him the time, and he and I were waiting for the same bus (which was disgustingly late and, even worse, we got on the wrong bus, but that’s another story.)

I mentioned that it was not surprising that ...

  5. Clearer Constitution

by , 07-03-2024 at 07:23 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I was thinking abut the Supreme Court decision regarding presidential immunity. Until quite recently, everyone understood that after leaving office, a former president was just another citizen, and no immunity followed the former president. I believe that understanding is obvious in the Constitution, but some people can't read as well as everyone used to.
Since reading comprehension has deteriorated so much, it might be a good idea to rewrite the Constitution is seven simpler terms. I fend ...
