Thank you Michael, Lug, Psyche, and Anza.
Oh, goodness. How beautiful. ^^
Beautiful pcitures, Virgil! Here in KY, we get to see fog spirals around the mountains most mornings. I may have to take a few pics to share.
Great pics. really nice light.
Top 2 are #2 and #3
Great pictures Virgil. My top three are 3, 5 and 6.
If I were framing two they would be 5 and 6.
For me 5 takes the top spot. It's as good an early morning shot as you are likely to see anywhere and one that anybody would be happy to see in a frame every day.
Ok and the scoring is - drum roll please -
#1 - 3 votes
#2 - 11
#3 - 17
#4 - 6
#5 - 15
#6 - 6
#7 - 4
And the winner is number 3!
Actually i could have made a case for numbers 2,3,4,or 5. It doesn't cost all that much to print them out in 8x10 size. I think I'll have all four printed and then I'll see which one gets the frame. Thank you all.
Why thank you Aunty. And no one nominated my blog for the best blog contest. You're the only one to comment on this entry. I guess it was a little arcane for most people. And I do think George Will's writing is also top notch, though not as good as Safire's. Safire's was the absolute best that I know of.
Great question on whether Safire was a descriptive or a prescriptive grammarian. I'm not exactly sure. I can see him defending both ways. What I clearly recall is an article he wrote that he was in complete disagreement with Chomksy and Steven Pinker that grammar was innately structured in the brain. Safire believed it was a learned phenomena.
Well I did a search on Safire and prescriptive/descriptive grammar and came up with this:
Apparently he definitely considered himself prescriptive. In typical Safire fashion, he called himself a snoot in that column. But I know Safire felt free to break the rules. I guess when you do it consciously you are still prescriptive. Unfortunately for me I don't have grammar on my fingertips like he does, and so I have no choice but to be descriptive myself.
Another popular linguist/grammarian writing today is John McWhorter. Not sure if you've come across any of his writing.
Glad you both enjoyed that Sara and Opti.
Opti, I am fine and so is my hearing. Thanks for stopping by.
tis been a while.
how are you? hows your hearing? And like you I like to have my tv volume louder than normal, nothing to do with my hearing. I need loud volume and subtitles, weird I know. my dad can't understand why I need both. I need to read and listen at the same time.
Hi, Virg. This was a nice tribute. Once I
had outgrown adolescence, I took a "180"
on Safire's opinion of politics, but I retained my admiration for his prose style.
(Same with George Will-- I disagree with his opinions but love the way he writes.)
Here's my take on Wm Safire
Couple of questions: Do you think Bill Safire was a prescriptive or descriptive
grammarian? If the former, would he have said "graduated FROM college?"
Also, he would've asked you to ditch the
apostrophe in this phrase, where I'm sure
you meant "its complement." (It's is a
contraction for "it is.")
Overall, your blog ROCKS!
Pictures #3 and #5 for the win! The subtle lights are gorgeous. Excellent capture, Uncle Virg
wow, those are gorgeous. I don't think I can choose my top two but top three would be 2, 3 and 5. I think. :]
Oh no, Virgil!! Haha, that really is too bad they forgot you in there, but I'm happy you passed!
Thank you all. I'll give it another day or so and I will tabulate the winner...
Thanks Morden and Bailey. Glad you enjoyed it.
there is nothing wrong with having your music up. i have mine loud all the time. i almost got grounded for it! but yes, it is a volume comfort thing. very funny though! hahaha, i love reading your stories, they make me laugh every time.
Yup, know how it goes, and it confirmed what I already knew. I could hear all the tones that everybody hears and none that everybody else hears.
Glad you passed!
ah much better. I liked #1 best--then #6. Reminded me quite of bit of the western New York area I grew up in.
DEFINITELY 2, and I think 3. Great shots Virgil!
I'm at work and the pictures won't show for which I blame our IT rep. Will try to get back to them later when the Long Suffering One gives up the box.
