Nostalgia

Yet another token to my oldest childhood friend

Rate this Entry
To my best childhood friend

You've always been there
Steady,
constant,
strong,
forgiving

Years go by and I fail to look into your face
I never call,
I rarely visit, and even on those occasions
all you do is listen.

You've supported me in every decision I've made
You've never judged me
You've never given me punishment I didn't need
But you have tried to kill me when I needed it most

The times I've needed to heal the most,
you stood by like my own guardian angel,
the one I know I can count on always

You have silently watched on as I tried to break myself
Yet in your silence kept me sane
You witnessed the release from my single greatest burden

I know that you are everything to many people,
I know that you don't miss me when I'm gone
I know you don't realize when I come and go
And I know, you don't realize how much you mean to me,
and how much you have meant to me since I first met you

I always remember those cold summer nights,
laying out under the stars
watching the nighthawks soar about
listening to the coyotes howl at the moon
silently discussing life and its quirks

I dream of a day when we will be together always
and I hope it comes soon

I love the "letter" feel to this poem skib -- direct, honest, vivid. The line about watching the nighthawks strikes home with me. I have many fond memories of watching and listening to them.

    Good read.
