Okay as promised, i'd tell you all how the no smoking thing is going.
It is officially two weeks since i threw that packet of cigarettes into the bin at the train station! Two whole weeks! I seriously didnt think i'd last this long but i think even my mind was ready to fight the battle against nicotine.
It has been a slightly tough two weeks but not as bad as it has been in the past. I've had a few cravings but nothing major and i havent been aggrivated to the point when i wanted to murder someone... okay maybe the once but that was more because she was actually driving my nuts than the need for a cigarette.
Unfortunately, my no munching thing has been a major disaster, to the point where i am already a few pounds heavier. It doesnt help that i was chair bound for a week and half with my back which mean i wasnt doing my usual running around like a looney burning off all junk. I will however be no munchie as of from tomorrow and i have just for the first time in years managed to buy and item of clothing that was a small and not a medium and have it fit. I refuse to pile on the weight again just because i'm filling in the space with junk insead.
I did discover the funnest way of getting over cravings yesterday...bubble wrap. no munching involved and bubble wrap is by far the best invention ever! I am considering promoting it as a way to get rid of the cravings. Have a slogan and all! "Bubble wrap...the fun way to give up smoking!" I had a bit too much fun with it yesterday. even jumped up and down on it like a two year old.
Friday night was a challenge. I went out with my cousin and any smoker here can tell you when you start to drink the urge for a smoke becomes stronger than at any other point. I didnt have a single one!!!!
So another week of no smoking begins tomorrow...

Congratulations...I've never smoked, but from watching the guys at work try to quit....the biggest downfall is being around second hand smoke...

Great Niamh. Keep it up. May I just make one recommendation. Could you set aside a half hour every day, make it the same time as best as possible, and go for a brisk walk? Consider it your time, your health time. Just a half hour. Not only will it burn calories it will suppress needless appetite. So you will gain on both ends. Isn't your health worth a half hour a day?

Good luck Niamh, it can't be easy. My husband smokes and has had an on-off battle with quitting for years but I guess after smoking for 37 years it's going to be nigh on impossible for him to ever do it. Quit while you're young enough to, if that's what you want.
So what if you put on a little weight? One battle at a time. When you've quit you can lose it (cutting out the beer is a good way, sadly), or you could try munching on fruit or carrot sticks and stuff like that. Does your IBS allow that?

I've heard week three is the hardest- if you can get through this week, you've cracked the habit. I know it's especially difficult when out with smoking friends . As my father put it, he wanted to rip every cigarette out of the mouth every person he ever saw smoking and furiously puff away.

Yeah i think this week will be tough. but we will see!

Virg. I do a lot of walking. I usually walk quite briskly for about eight hours a day running from one part of the airport to the other. The only reason why i havent walked that much in the last couple of weeks is because i hurt my back and walking for more then a few minutes was a killer. Now that its much better i'm back to running around again, so a half hour walk wouldnt really make any difference. The only thing that will is restraining myself from eating teh amount of crap i've been eating with is way over my normal crap quota.

I never smoked, but I used to use chewing tobacco religiously and giving it up almost killed me. I found that week three was not too difficult at all, and I hope it is the same for you Niamh!
    Good luck!

Oh I'm sorry to hear about your back Niamh. Then once your back feels better I recommend a few stomach and obliques muscle exercises. Lots of back problems, especially with younger people, has to do with a weak middle and where the back tries to compensate. I can send you links for some easy excercises.

Congratulations on 2 weeks!! Doesn't it feel good when you can buy a size a little smaller?

If I were to recommend any exercising, I would say to practice yoga. I find it very beneficial. Actually, when I am not as worn out as I have been lately, it is my exercise of choice. At times it takes effort, but most of the time it doesn't feel as if you are doing much because you are focusing more on the breathing. Have you ever done it before?

Thanks for your suggestion Virg. I have been doing some exercises for the last few weeks that were recommended to me from a regular back sufferer which are great. And i have other exercises.

LW, I use a few Palates exercise to strengthen the lower back muscles and pelvic muscles. they are great. thought to me by a physotherapist who was also a Palates instructer. Really want to go to proper classes for either Palates and Yoga but my irregular hours make it impossible. But i have my mat, blocks and exercise ball all the same. I want to get back into thai chi. only ever got a chance to do a few classes.

Thanks for all the engouragement everyone! I feel like life is throwing obsticles in my way to challenge me right now.
