Some good news with some bad news

Rate this Entry
I am very excited that my new snake is here now. I just got him today. And he is absolutely gorgeous with the most stunning and brilliant coloration. I hope to have some pics to post up soon of my new baby. I do not know what his former owners use to call him, but his new name now is Loki which is taken from my favorite of the Norse deities. The trickster god and god of fire. Because my snakes has very flame like coloration, and snakes have a history of being seen in a trickster like guise in myth.

Now the bad news is that nature our fate, or what you will had decided to resolve the problem for me which I initially had in wondering where I would be able to keep my new snake. A few days ago Ring, my original snake died. I believe that it was just due to natural causes. She was 14 years old.

Bitter sweet for you D-M. May Loki live a long life.

Yes that it is! And thank you, I do hope he has a long and fruitful life with us. Being that I am getting him from someone else I don't know who old he may already be, but I do hope to have many years with him, and he seems to still be pretty small in size, so I would not think he is that old yet.

What is the average life span for snakes?

Also, can you teach snakes "tricks." Or, not really tricks, but condition certain behaviors?

For King Snakes, which is what Ring was, the life-span is between 10-15 years on average, with the potential to live up to 20 years or possibly more. I am not certain how much life-span my vary between different breeds of snakes.

As far as I know snakes cannot actually be "trained" but if you handle them a lot they will become more accustomed to being held which can make them more docile. Like with my snake Ring, sometimes when I held her, I could get her to just coil herself around my wrist and just sit there calmly. And I could let her slither around on the floor without worrying about her trying to dart off and escape though I would not leave her unattended or let her get too far from my grasp.

Thank you! Snakes are vastly misunderstood, but they are truly beautiful and unique creatures.
