Jonah Hex--The Movie

Rate this Entry
Was the first to arrive for a midnight showing of Jonah Hex starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. There ended up about 16 of us or so in attendance. One young fellow and I talked about the comics and characters after the film and was an enjoyable time. We were both wondering during the film if WE were the only ones that ever read the comics.

I give it a 7 out 10 but that's loyalty to one of my top favorite series of them all. The Avengers and Batman are up there of course. The ticket price was $11 but I got a military discount out of it since the Long Suffering One was footing the bill. She begged off going and I knew this would be of little interest to her. Ruth has heard enough about Hex over the years to last her a lifetime.

There were aspects of the comics to it but the producers were charting their own course. To be honest I do NOT expect it to do well. There were some supernatural aspects to the plot that might appeal to some and frankly not enough of the West to appeal to me. Seemed more a series of scenes strung together with a seen it before plot attached.

The Hex I would have liked to have seen most closely would resembled Clint Eastwood's Outlaw Josey Wales for scope and pathos.

Megan's character's real name brought a smile by way of an in-joke from the comics. Her acting was non-existant but she shoots well and easy on the eyes. Would be interesting to see her in a real drama to see what she's really made of. Brolin looked the part more and more as I settled in but I prefer Hex's short Conferate jacket to the long one he was wearing most of the time. They go out of their way to make Hex politically palatable. In the comcs he wouldn;t have cared very much what you thought of him--most of time. which makes scnes when he shows his intter torments that much meaningful in the comics.

NEXT Year: Green Lantern--better be Hal Jordan or the wife will hear me grumbling forever. And NO--not lookig forward the the Green Hornet--was never much of a fan.

I have ZERO respect for Megan Fox. The only reason she gets any roles is because she's a sex symbol, and the only reason she's as 'good looking' as she is is plastic surgery.

    Megan Fox before and after

I'm ashamed to say I have no interest in this. The only comics I was ever remotely interested in were the X-Men, but I was disappointed with the movies. The more recent Wolverine movie was decent, but other than that they're pretty so-so for me. I do love the animated series, the old one from the eighties (I'm using old very loose here ;)). I've been checking them out from the library and sharing them with the kids. I think they both like them well enough, and it is better than anything they show for cartoons of that genre now :D. Love you!

Huh, she was pretty before, so why bother? And she better watch out, plastic surgery can come back to haunt you. Brolin is quite a decent actor; good review, rich. I will consider this.

Enjoyed your review Rich. I want to see this film as well -- I've always liked the Hex character and westerns in general.

Oh and Green Lantern: I'm totally looking forward to that film too!

Yikes, I've never even heard of Jonah Hex. Sounds cool, but I'll wait for it to come to the rentals.

I would feel guilty thinking anyone seeing the film got a fair taste of the comics. The comics are so much better. DC Comics doesn't make a lot off them but there are a title they can point to with pride as a bit above the ordinary in quality. Jonah is a tormented man with a lot of baggage but back then men didn't talk about that sort of thing.Life has hardened him and generally when he doe let his (rare) softer side out he'll pay a price. Does seem to like and be protective of kids--except ONCE and I felt the writers for once missed the mark there--it's currently ritten by a two man team. Comedian might appreciate this--the film was a bit better then the old DC Savage movie which still lives in infamy.

I thought that one was pretty funny. I'm assuming it was a terrible representation of the comic, huh?

Yeh--pretty much. A fan would not be pleased--a normal movie goer would be scratching their head wondering why they should care Qim.

I totally want to see this movie. I don't read comics and many of them ( with the exception of the more obvious ones like Spider Man, X-Men, Iron Man etc...) I have not even heard about until they are made into a movie, but I do love most comic book movies and from the previews it just looks totally like my kind of movie.

As soon as I saw the first trailer for it I was like OMG I have to see that!

Wow! I never even knew there was a comic!
Yeah, I wanted to see it but my girlfriend really didn't want to spent 2 hours next to me while I checked out Megan Fox (even thought I know she is completely plastic, she's still pretty hot ).

I heard from a lot of my friends that it wasn't so good, so I don't know if I still should go see it.

I got this in an e-mail so I was able to read it when you first posted. I'm really glad you got to go see the movie. Home Depot also gives a military discount. I need to have my husband go get his little card.

Thanks for checking on me. I had been under the weather, but am better for now.
