Camus said "In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer." This is, really, the tale of how two vastly different cultures came together and in the depth of winter found for themselves their own invincible summer one unforgettable Sunday afternoon.

    I have a cold
and I am telling my boyfriend about it. "I ate Ramen last night," I say. "It sounded good-hot noodles and chicken broth."

So itís twelve oíclock and my son and I are watching a movie. Itís not one Iím enjoying particularly. Four attractive American kids have traveled into the countryside to visit some ruins. A crazed man appears and shoots one of them, after which they are held hostage, or to put it in the words of one of them, ďquarantined.Ē There is, it seems, a plant, which is more than just a plant, and I donít really need to see the rest to know where this is going.

    Sweating and hot,
    Searching for
    Death, leashed

    Until the day
    he spent ...

  4. The girl who sang death and sangfroid

I really think she is one of those
    Unnerving children depicted in the
Occasional movie who stare and understand,
Who make us squirm with the power of their
    magnificent and terrible understanding

    Then with unswerving devotion plunge
Their hands into onesí midriff; I can
Hear the squelching, like galoshes in mud,
And feel her feather fingers grasping, as
She searches for whatever is there,
    Whether worms, long, white, ...

It was January, three years ago when we noticed a little gray cat, probably a kitten, hanging around with Chet, the male tabby that belonged to our neighbors. He was friendly, she seemed interested, but wouldn't let us touch her. I began setting food out for her. Surprisingly, both she and Chet would disappear for days at a time. Sometimes I would think they were gone for good when suddenly they would reappear.

I did make progress, though. At first I had to put the food out, then ...
