  1. Improving Humanity

by , 07-12-2014 at 10:42 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I realize that improving humanity would be a matter of opinion, but it can be interesting to think about improving a complicated organism. First throw out everything that you have ever read about improving the human race. Some of it might actually be reasonable, but most such things are just wrong. Writers of fiction use improved humans as plot devices, and some scientists test theories by thinking of the implications.

There are good reasons for many of the genetic disorders that ...

  2. Future Evolution

by , 07-08-2014 at 03:59 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I realize that I claimed that evolution had ended, but that may have been slightly exaggerated. While humans were essentially built the way they are quite a while ago, it appears that evolution is continuing in the same direction now. You have probably read ideas of humans turning into lightly muscled large brained animals with no hair at all in the future. That isn’t how evolution has been going over the last thirty thousand years.

Brain size has actually fallen a bit, especially ...

  3. Is This A Scam?

by , 07-03-2014 at 03:49 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
Today I was approached by a guy who works for Grassroots Campaigns, Inc. who was try to collect money for Planned Parenthood. I don’t know how widespread Grassroots Campaigns is, but they regularly have people begging for their campaign do jour here in the Connecticut River Valley.

When I first noticed their canvassers I started to wonder about them, so I interrogated some of them. I asked what percentage of what they collect goes to the group that they name, and all of the ones ...
  4. If it’s Broke, Then Fix It

by , 07-01-2014 at 06:56 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I know the old saw is “If it’s not broke, then don’t fix it,” and that isn’t bad advice, but people have made huge amounts of money changing things just because they want to. Then there are the products that were changed and soon left the scene. I recently told a bartender about a beer that he had never heard of, because it was “fixed” so l that it went out of production. Maybe you remember Tuborg. It is a Danish beer (link below), and in the early 1970’s it started shipping to the U.S.A., and it ...

  5. Denial of Science

by , 06-27-2014 at 09:26 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I recently met someone who pointed out that the backers of the idea that there is some great climate change that was caused by human activity going on are minions of a vast international conspiracy. I don’t go in for conspiracies, but the climate change people exhibit many of the characteristics of a religion, and those characteristics might be indicators on something like a conspiracy.

I see that movement as religious in nature, because it has articles of faith that cannot be proven ...
