Memories of the 28th Century

Miscellaneous thoughts about miscellaneous matters

  1. Culture Versus Nature

by , 10-30-2015 at 03:44 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
Recently, I made the mistake of joining an online discussion of religious exemptions to certain laws; discussions such as, whether a baker should be legally required to make a wedding cake for a gay couple getting married, if his religion finds that abhorrent. Or whether American Indians should be able to hunt eagles for their feathers as part of their religious activity. Even with people who are quite open-minded this is a potentially explosive subject. My opinion is that persons who have religious ...
  2. Lumping or Splitting

    Don't Box Me In

On a board that I am a member of someone casually and largely sarcastically posted that philosophy is dead. I protested that just because he didn’t call things philosophy didn’t mean that philosophy is no longer. The discussion started with respect to the subgenres of Science Fiction and Fantasy. These subcategories are just conveniences for publishers and suggestions to booksellers as to where particular books should be displayed.

  3. The Plot Thickens

Or: Why Bernie might as well give up now

Socialism is a term that is too broad to be especially useful, but it has some meanings that are significant to U.S. politics. In its broadest sense, socialism is an economic system that is democratic; that is, operated by the people involved. Democracy is rule by the people, in contrast with republican government in which the people elect representatives, aristocracy in which an elite rules, monarchy in which a single ruler runs things. Here ...
  5. Gun Crazy?

by , 10-09-2015 at 08:35 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I have read a few items recently that suggest that many people think that Americans are obsessed with guns, firearms. That idea is mistaken. While there are some people who love guns more than is reasonable, Americans have no particular affection for guns; they reserve their love for people who might appreciate it, rather than having love for inanimate objects.

Comments about Americans being gun crazy usually come out shortly after some mentally unbalanced person has slain several ...
