  1. Potential Life Expectancy

The One Who Dies Last Wins

I realize that I wrote about this a while back, but it might be a good time to revisit the matter. As I am sure you know, one of the foremost experts in longevity declared a few years ago that the first person who would live to be 1000 years old probably was already alive. I donít know whether he was right, but that may turn out to be true; Iíll let you know in about a thousand years.

Even if humans donít start making it to a thousand, there ...
  2. Multitasking?: How-to?

by , 01-29-2015 at 09:20 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
The idea of multi-tasking has been around for a few decades now, but humans still cannot do it. Humans can and do switch from one task to another smoothly and quickly, but humans cannot do more than one thing at a time with any degree of competence. The article in Wikipedia puts it as ďapparent performance by an individual of handling more than one task at the same time.Ē It is merely ďapparent, because anything done while one is doing something else has to be redone to clean out the errors. ...
  3. Perceptions and How to Express Them

by , 01-28-2015 at 09:20 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I have been trying to turn my pieces of a novel into a complete novel, but rumbled to a stop after 15,000 or 20,000 words in the first two attempts. The novel is about the nature of space-time and consciousness, or how consciousness is created, in part, by our conceptions of space-time or of some other fundamental basis for reality. The world is what you conceive of it to be, because thatís the only space-time in which those ideas could make any sense. On the other hand, the characters may be somewhat ...
  4. More War Dogs

by , 01-24-2015 at 08:54 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
A few days ago I remembered how mercenaries had been quite significant in African wars a few decades ago, and the wars werenít as messy as what is going on in Nigeria with Boko Haram and in and around Uganda with the Lord's Resistance Army. There were several rebellions in the Congo that used mercenaries extensively. Groups assembled by Bob Denard, Jean Schramme, and Mad Mike Hoare cleaned up many rebellions that would have grown into messes as bad as Boko Haram, if they hadnít been put down. The ...
  5. Shrinking Your Carbon Footprint

by , 01-23-2015 at 11:07 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
These days many people are suffering under the mistaken belief that they and their fellow humans are causing significant change to the Earth's climate. This belief is contrary to what the data and logic tell us. The evidence of historical data shows that there have been similar fluctuations in climate throughout history and before history. The Earth has experience rises and drops in temperature. The fluctuations have a variety of causes, but the principal cause is the amount of energy from the Sun ...
