  1. Hoaxes and Delusions

by , 12-04-2014 at 10:54 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
Recently I thought about making comments about the people in this area who are infected with the Ebola virus. I was just thinking about getting a little more clear space around me. Good sense prevailed, and I didnít mention the people with Ebola, because that might be a criminal act. I just searched for the laws under which I might be charged, and I became uncertain as to whether there is such a law. Apparently ďfraud is the intentional deception of a person or entity by another made for monetary ...

  2. Alcohol and Development

by , 12-01-2014 at 09:18 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
For some reason I was thinking about the unfortunate matter of prohibitions on alcohol that are age based and the matter of binge drinking and stupidity. It probably came to mind because there is an oversized university near here, and it isnít easy to get a sandwich and a pint of ale together (some fools think that it will encourage alcoholism or something like that). It is sad that the custom of consuming alcoholic beverages with meals is dying out, but thatís what the people who think that they ...

Simply complaining well is not enough, especially if one is dealing with government bureaucrats. Continued application of gentle pressure will eventually wear down even the hardest and firmest bureaucrat. It appears that my attempts to get the regional transit authority to train and supervise bus drivers might be going somewhere; either that, or theyíre legal action against me. I got a phone call from one of the higher ups who just wanted me to repeat what I had already put into writing. After ...

The matter of the fraud about serum cholesterol causing heart disease came up at Starbucks this morning. It was early enough that we avoided a fight (we agreed). I donít blame any particular people for making any grand conspiracy, and I consider this myth simply a side effect of many people and businesses trying to make more money. I donít begrudge anyone a living, but making money by damaging the health of millions, or even billions, of people is a bit extreme.

    There is no doubt ...

  5. Over-Extension of Government

by , 11-17-2014 at 10:00 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
Here in the U.S.A. there are specific, written boundaries on the powers of the central government, but the constitutional limits have not been honored in observation. The extensions of the U.S. government have taken many forms, and the extension has been largely accidental or collateral damage, as the feds decided to take control of one thing it entailed other matters also. In most countries the limits of governmental authority are not as clear, but even with clear, explicit limits to its range ...
