  1. Straightening Out Migration

by , 05-22-2018 at 04:01 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I find it somewhat amusing that people are still making noise about people trying to immigrate to the U.S. without noticing that most of the immigrants are more interested in leaving their present location and situation, and they just want to live in a less unpleasant place. Whether they are fleeing economic problems, bad government, dangerous street gangs, civil war, or whatever, they want to escape a bad place. Refugees from Syria are fleeing from a civil war in which several other country are ...

  2. On Sleep

by , 05-16-2018 at 10:02 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
During my nearly two months in the clutches of the medical industry I developed a greater appreciation for sleep, because I missed so much.

When I was in the hospital, on a typical night I would get a few hours of sleep before I would be awoken by technicians for some medical reason, vital signs or to change an IV or something. After being woken up that way I seldom got back to sleep; although I might get another hour or two of sleep then or during the day. But I needed sleep. The ...

  3. Hospital Garb

by , 05-09-2018 at 08:52 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I have been in medical facilities for most of the last two months. I wasnít going anywhere, and much of the time medical personnel were doing various things to me, so I spent most of the time just wearing a hospital johnnie, as they are called. They are designed for easy access. I have heard and read of them being undignified, insulting, disgusting, and obscene, etc. for decades, but I hadnít worn one, so I didnít know or care. My decades of avoiding johnnies ended with a ruptured abdominal aortic ...

  4. Economic War

by , 03-02-2018 at 08:39 AM (Memories of the 28th Century)
Not all wars are examples of diplomacy failing. The economic war that Trump has set up is a personal affair, that he didnít negotiated with anyone; although at Davos he commented that a weak dollar would help U.S. trade. And it will; it will make U.S. goods less expensive than similar goods from other countries. That should help U.S. manufacturers to some degree. But a weak dollar will make the U.S. less desirable as a place to invest, because it will lower the values of capital assets, especially ...
  5. Improving Football

by , 02-05-2018 at 08:35 PM (Memories of the 28th Century)
I wrote this on Superbowl Sunday, and I was in a bar that has no TVís. When I was young and foolish, I liked football, both to play and to watch. Alas, like most things football has deteriorated over time. In any population there are only so many great players, and the NFL had all of them, but some greedy people created additional teams and started the AFL to try to cash in on the gameís popularity. Initially, the AFL tried to create a big show, and they did grab a few good players, and the NFL ...
