This "romance" is highly intriguing and provides the perfect example of an American classic. Hidden between the lines lie references to the political issues of the time and to Hawthorne's own life. His powerful theme of "guilt" portrayed in The Scarlet Letter is also evident in this piece. I agree, The House of Seven Gables was truely a literary masterpiece.
