Having just finished writing an essay on the differing characters of Elinor and Marianne I have to say that this is one of the books written by Austen that I have enjoyed studying immensly. Although ultimately an immature work compared to later novels, it does, I feel, demonstrate perfectly the role that women played in society at this time and presents very clearly (through Elinor) the emotions that were expected of them. Marianne of course didn't follow these 'rules' at first, resulting in not only a broken heart but a very public broken heart! A very enjoyable read!!
