The suggestion that Austin in not a great literary figure because the scope of her novels is limited is unfounded. She writes about the gentry in England at the time she does, because that is what she knows best. She understands it minutely, all the intrigue, subtleties and rules.<br><br>What do you suggest she should have done? Expand her writing into unrealistic Westerns or the history of war or something? Within these stories about girls and marriage and gossip she manages to explore politics, women’s rights, education, social politics and much much more. <br><br>She is undoubtedly one of the greats!<br>
