Readers get distracted by the technology and the spying that goes on in the story. Those are really just backdrop. The main theme in the story is you enslave people by destroying their mind and hearts. First, it you control the language, you control the thought. Second, reinforce the love for Bog Brother by destroying love for others. Smith's turning point came during torture when he said "Do it to Julia!" That's what broke him. You destroy peoples minds by destroying their words and you destroy their hearts by destroying their love. Without heart or mind, people are incapable of action.

And contray to a previous review, this book does not have a happy ending.
