It is my grave and considered opinion that George, or Eric to his friends, should be viewed as a great companion to us all and to modern literature in this country. When I first read 1984 I felt as if I had breached manhood and had killed the metaphorical lion of satire. I was ready to be accepted by the tribe and my analytical spear was sharpened and bloodied by the fight. In many ways Winston and myself are kindred spirits as we both struggle against oppressive regimes: he against Big Brother and myself against the Henley on Thames Women's institute for the right to join. So as I gird my loins and prepare for battle once again, I leave you with the mantra of a thousand tortured souls screaming out in the proverbial night: " Shooooot oooop Alik." I thank you.
