I really have to wonder about the ending of this book. The supposed 'victory' by Oceania. I got the impression that Julia (prior to ministry of Love) felt that the terrorist attacks in the city were committed by the actual Brotherhood. If what she believes was actually the truth, then there was no war and no victory at all.

I don't want to make the assumption that this is a well concealed 'happy ending' but I do think that it's an ending that is double-sided. Winston could possibly love or hate Big Brother, it's really up to the interpretation of the reader. The war could have been won or not won. There may have been no real war to begin with. If Winston really did vanquish the attempts by O'Brien to dehumanize him, then there was still possibility of escaping and joining the Proles.
