As a discourse on the Soviet disaster Animal Farm is interesting, and certainly not lacking in satirical bite, but in my opinion its' power lies primarily in what it reveals about human nature. The regime that the animals created on their farm was initially utopian, and it is disheartening to see it collapse due to the moral corruption of its' intelligensia. The system itself was good, except that it failed to proect the animals against the evils of those intelligent and ambitious enough to seek power. Every one of the pigs in Animal Farm demonstrates an elitist attitude to some degree (even Snowball), and it is for this reason that the fram turns into a oligarchy reminiscent of the old Czarist regime. In writing Animal Farm Orwell, who is obviously a misanthropist, has succeeding admirably in making a powerful statement about the self-serving nature of mankind.
