It symbolizes quite vividly, how strong love can be, but how minipulative and dangerous it can be in the wrong hands, so to speak. The love between Heathcliff and Catherine would have blossomed nicely and they would have been happy if it were not for other people getting in the way. i.e if Catherine had not been "kidnapped" by Earnshaw. But love is as slippery and as dangerous as the soap in a prison, one you llet it slip, youre buggered.
