Finally a Henry James novel where the ending makes sense first up!

Nick Dormer sacrifices painting for politics to appease both the beautiful Julia Dallow and aged patron, Mr. Carteret. But friend Gabriel Nash scolds him for the sacrifice, motivating his return to art.

Young diplomat Peter Sherringham falls in love with aspiring actress, Miriam Rooth, but their goals are incompatible.

Nick paints Miriam as the tragic muse which upsets Julia. Eventually, all marry wisely and live happily ever after while outsider Nash travels the world in search of truth.

I've read better endings but have I missed something?
