The beauty of Wuthering Heights is that it creates no characters that you may love, few characters that you may hate, and leaves almost every judgement up to the reader. The reason many find it difficult is because it makes you think; it does not decide things for you. On one hand Heathcliff is a vicious villain who takes pleasure in the pain of others, and ultimately wins through obtaining Wuthering Heights, Thrushcross Grange, Linton's inheritance and Isabella's dowry. However, on the other side of the coin there is the view that Heathcliff was abused by Hindley from a young age, and disrespected by everyone (even Nelly calls him 'it'). His one love is Catherine, but through the conventions of society she should marry Edgar Linton. She believes she marries Edgar out of love for Heathcliff - she thinks she will be able to support him.

Fascinating - you make your mind up!
