After seeing the original movie a score of times and just having viewed the new version, I decided I needed to read the book to see which rendition was closer to HG's vision. Well, it was the original movie by far.
The book is quite pessimistic to a point. Nothing humans have accomplished or will accomplish matter at all.
But I also think that the book left an optimistic hole for the reader to climb through. The Time Traveler may have returned and helped humankind (at least the good looking half) regain some of its human qualities that had gone away.
It was also a social commentary on socialism versus capitalism gone to its fullest extent which doesn't surface clearly in either movie.
