I have to say that Far from the M.C. is one of the most wonderful books ever written. Yes, Hardy does go off the point a little, and yes, some of it is long winded (and I hate to say it...almost boring,) but the story, the emotions and general aura of the book more than make up for descriptions of pocket watches etc. And the dialogue!!! Esp. Boldwood's 'fury' part just shows what a magical writer Hardy was. I can also recommend The Mayor of Casterbridge as one of my favourite books. If you want a good story, read that. Hardy is a master of description and is an excellent raconteur, if I may use that word for a written work?! Don't give up on this book; be a Gabriel Oak and love it forever!
