i think this book is ecseptionally good but hardy is a clumsy writer as he over describes things

I wonder if the problem is more with us than with Hardy. Nowadays we are impatient with authors, like Hardy and Dickens and George Eliot, who are so visually oriented that they want to make certain that we see what they see. We just want to cut to the heart of things and get on with it.

I wouldn't say that he over-describes things. We're simply used to having quick descriptions because of our exposure to TV and film.
