I don't know if the respective English teachers have made any attempt to help students understand how customs and mores of societies change, but clearly most of the students who comment have no idea of what society was like in Hardy's time. Without telephone, radio, telly, cars, tractors, electricity, farmers had very real tasks. Women had no rights. Men were dominant by law. Children worked very hard, and were only heard of when spoken to, not whenever they wished. Some of these sarcastic teens today should be transported back to Hardy's era, where they would probably die early.
